Radiotherapy Program for Osteoarthritis
The Yolanda G Barco Oncology Institute has developed a Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT) Program for osteoarthritis as a treatment option for people living with chronic osteoarthritis pain. This gentle, targeted form of radiation is very different from the higher-dose treatments used for cancer and has been shown in emerging research to help reduce inflammation and ease joint discomfort for some patients.
This non-invasive therapy may be considered for individuals whose symptoms continue to limit daily activities despite medications, physical therapy, or other standard treatments. The experienced radiation care team at YGBOI will meet with patients to discuss medical history and appropriate course of treatment. The goal with LDRT is to expand access to safe, advanced therapies that can improve quality of life. Patients with osteoarthritis should ask their physician for a referral if they meet the criteria for low-dose radiation therapy.
LDRT includes:
- six treatment sessions
- two sessions per week for three weeks
- treatment for up to three joints
Ideal candidates for LDRT:
- are patients 50 years and older
- have been experiencing osteoarthritis symptoms for more than three months
- have not had joint replacement surgery
- continue to experience persistent symptoms after NSAID treatment and/or physical therapy
