Pennie: the Pennsylvania Insurance Marketplace

Pennie® is Pennsylvania’s official health insurance marketplace and the only source for financial savings to lower the cost of coverage and care. The savings are achieved through tax credits, which help to lower premiums.

The plans sold through Pennie are for individuals and families who do not have access to health coverage from their job and otherwise are not eligible for Medical Assistance (Medicaid). Those who are self-employed or are retired and therefore do not have healthcare coverage provided by an employer, are ideal candidates as well!

Open Enrollment Period

Open enrollment for health insurance—the period in which you can enroll without needing a qualifying life event—runs from November 1 until January 15.

  • Enroll by December 15: your insurance is effective January 1 of the upcoming year

  • Enroll by January 15: your insurance plan will be effective on February 1

When signing up for health insurance, it is helpful to have the following information at hand:

  1. Your date of birth (DOB) and those of any dependents
  2. Your social security number (SSN) and those of any dependents
  3. Who are the dependents on your income tax?
  4. Your projected, annual household income
