Anaerobic Culture/ Gram Stain

Test includes culture and gram stain. If indicated, further testing considered medically appropriate will be reflexed, resulting in additional charges.

Specimen Requirements:
Acceptable Sources:
Abscess, aspirate, Bartholin’s gland, most fluids, blood, surgical wounds or tissue, sinus aspirate, transtrachial aspirate, protected bronchoscopy, surgically collected female genitourinary specimens, and suprapubic urine aspirations

Unacceptable Sources:
Sputum, urine, stool, vaginal, throat, nose, eye, ear, tracheal secretions, superficial wound or other skin site, semen or urethra, prostate fluid, lochia

Use anaerobic swab or send specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container supplied by Meadville Medical Center Laboratory. Refrigerate specimen after collection. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

NOTE: CULTURE SITE IS REQUIRED ON REQUEST FORM FOR PROCESSING.

Negative:
Preliminary report: 1 day
Final report: 2-7 days

Positive:
Preliminary report: upon identification of growth
Final report: 1-3 days after growth
