Synovial Fluid Analysis

Additional Info:
Includes cell count, color, crystals, differential, mucin clot, turbidity, and viscosity.

Methodology: Macroscopic and Microscopic Examination and XN2000

Specimen Requirements: 1 green-top (lithium heparin) tube (minimum: 3.0 mL of heparinized synovial fluid). Forward promptly at room temperature only.

NOTE: Green-top (sodium heparin) tube is also acceptable, however, the additive may combine with the specimen, causing the formation of crystals.

Analytical Time: 1-3 days

Days Set Up: Monday through Sunday

CPT Information:
85810 – viscosity
89051 – cell count
89060 – crystal, synovial fluid
83872 – mucin, synovial fluid
