Nasopharyngeal Culture

Methodology: Multiple methodologies

Specimen Requirements: Nasopharyngeal swab cultures should be collected as follows:

  1. Using a small swab on a flexible wire (orange cap) supplied by Meadville Medical Center Laboratory, gently pass swab through the nose into the nasopharynx, rotate, and remove swab.
  2. Place swab into suitable transport tube.
  3. Refrigerate specimen after collection.

NOTE: Nasal cultures do not predict the etiology of sinus infection. The specimen of choice for culture for sinusitis is a needle aspirate from the affected sinus.

Analytical Time:
Preliminary report: 1 day
Final report: 2-3 days
