Glucose Tolerance Test, 3-Hr, (Pregnant), Plasma

This test is performed at Meadville Medical Center Laboratory only.

Methodology: Enzymatic, Hexokinase

Specimen Requirements: CALL MEADVILLE MEDICAL CENTER LABORATORY TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT.

  • Obtain fasting specimen following an overnight (8-16 hour) fast. (See additional preparatory information below.) Collect 1 light green-top (lithium heparin) tube (minimum: 1.0 mL of lithium heparin plasma).
  • If the fasting blood level is <104 mg/dl and >50 mg/dL, cola is administered.
  • 1, 2 and 3 hours after the cola is finished, draw a successive light green-top (lithiumm heparin) tubes (minimum: 1.0 mL of lithium heparin plasma). Refrigerate specimen after collection.

NOTE:
Medication – Prior to scheduling this test, patients should discuss with their physician regarding any medications that may affect a glucose tolerance test.

Diet – Testing should be performed after 3 days of unrestricted diet containing at least 150 g of carbohydrate per day. Patient should be fasting at least 8 hours and no longer than 16 hours before the morning of the test. Patient should also refrain from smoking prior to the test.

Schedule – Glucose tolerance testing is scheduled in the morning, preferably between 7-9 AM. The individual should engage in minimal physical activity during the test period and refrain from eating and smoking during the test. Sips of water are allowed during the test. The patient should remain in the phlebotomy area for his/her own protection during the test.

Analytical Time: 1 day
