The Only Certified EMG Lab in Northwest Pennsylvania!
There are really only 2 types of physicians who can become board-certified to perform electromyograms (EMGs): neurologists and physiatrists! An EMG is a diagnostic test that uses pins and electric shocks to test nerve and muscle function. The data gathered from the test will help to determine if patients have any nerve damage or muscle disease.
A specialist, such as a rheumatologist or surgeon, or a primary care physician can refer patients for an EMG to help understand muscle and nerve function. The results will help the provide to make a n appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan for the patient.
When Do I Need an EMG?
At Orthopedic Associates of Meadville, Dr. Theresa Wheeling, a physiatrist, now exclusively practices electrodiagnostics, which includes EMGs and nerve conduction tests. Dr. Wheeling is a member of the American Association of Neuromuscular Medicine & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM), and her electrodiagnostic lab is currently the only one in Northwest Pennsylvania that has been certified by the organization.
EMGs are ordered for symptoms such as:
- weakness
- numbness
- tingling
- cramping
- gait and balance dysfunction
- burning pain
If you think you have these symptoms, ask your physician if a referral for an EMG would be the next best step for you!
