Meadville Medical Center today shared a notice to the community.
On Tuesday, October 13, 2026, from 9:26 a.m. to 3:50 p.m., patients and visitors who utilized the emergency room entrance, emergency room, radiology areas and restrooms by the emergency room were potentially exposed to someone with measles.
Measles symptoms may appear 7 to 21 days after contact with the virus. If you used the Emergency Department entrance, you should monitor for symptoms until November 3, 2026.
Measles symptoms to watch for include:
- High fever (may spike to 104°)
- Cough
- Runny nose (coryza)
- Red, watery eyes
- 2-3 days later Koplik spots or tiny white spots may appear inside the mouth
Rash is last to appear typically 3 to 5 days after the first symptoms. The rash usually begins as flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and then spread downward to the neck, trunk, arms, legs, and feet.
If you have had measles or have received two doses of the measles vaccine you are considered immune and are at low risk to develop measles but should monitor for symptoms.
If you have not had measles and did not receive the measles vaccine you should quarantine until November 3.
Getting the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine is the best protection from the highly contagious measles virus, providing 97 percent lifetime protection after two doses.
If you develop symptoms and need to be seen by a healthcare provider, please notify your family medicine provider to let them know you were exposed to measles and have symptoms of measles. If you make an appointment with your family provider or plan to go to the Emergency Department, please call prior to arrival to limit exposure to others.
People who are experiencing symptoms, should contact their healthcare provider or call the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s toll-free hotline at 877-PA-HEALTH (877-724-3258).
