The Liberty Surgical Care Unit is a 16-stretcher patient care area located adjacent to the Liberty Street Operating Room Suite. Hours of operation are from 0500 until the last patient is either discharged to home or admitted to the hospital for the night. The unit is dedicated to the perioperative care of patients having surgical procedures performed at the Liberty Street facility. Perioperative care is provided to patients ranging in ages from pediatric to geriatric, with all types of surgical needs.
All categories of surgical patients are admitted to this unit. Those with an anticipated same day discharge are returned to this unit after surgery and/or PACU care, to be observed and discharged. Those patients requiring admission to the hospital are admitted to an inpatient bed following their surgery and PACU stay.
The unit is staffed by ACLS Certified RNs, LPNs, Clerical and support staff. All direct patient care staff are BLS certified.
Family members are encouraged to accompany the patient. A family waiting room is provided for comfort. The surgeon may speak with the family following the case in a designated area outside the OR.
The patient’s plan of care is based on the assessment and educational requirements. Support services offered to all inpatients, are available to this unit. This includes but is not limited to Social Services, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Laboratory and Radiology.
Pre-op surgical blocks are performed in the unit prior to surgery. Staff monitor the patients at all times utilizing Space Lab Cardiac monitors prior to being taken to the OR suite.
Discharge planning and education is provided to the patient and family. Patients must provide their own transportation post operatively from the hospital; they are not permitted to drive themselves home from the hospital after receiving anesthesia medication.
